- Expert demonstrates easy stretches and movements that improve circulation, prevent stiffness, and maintain energy levels during extended computer sessions
- Expert explains that even small, consistent movements throughout the day can significantly improve posture, focus, and overall well-being
When you’re deep into a gaming session or focused on work, hours can pass before you realise you haven’t moved. This sedentary behaviour can lead to stiffness, poor circulation, and decreased energy levels over time.
“People often don’t realise how much sitting affects their body until they start feeling the consequences,” says Neal Taparia, Founder of Unwind Media, which owns 1000 Mines, an online gaming platform that has seen over 2 billion games played yearly. “As someone who spends significant time at a computer both running gaming platforms and playing games myself, I’ve learned the importance of incorporating movement throughout the day.”
Below, Taparia shares five simple yet effective exercises you can do without leaving your desk, designed to keep your body active and your mind sharp during long computer sessions.
#1 Wrist and Finger Stretches: Combat Gaming Fatigue
Whether you’re clicking through spreadsheets or rapidly navigating a Minesweeper grid, your wrists and fingers absorb significant strain.
“Start by extending your arm with your palm up, then gently pull your fingers back toward your body with your other hand,” Taparia explains. “Hold for 15-20 seconds, then flip your palm down and repeat. Next, make a fist, then release and spread your fingers wide. Repeat these movements 5-10 times whenever you feel tension building.”
These stretches help prevent repetitive strain injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome, conditions that plague gamers and office workers everywhere. Improving circulation to these small but crucial muscles allows you to maintain dexterity and reduce discomfort during long sessions.
#2 Seated Spinal Twist: Reset Your Posture
Poor posture is a common issue during extended computer use, but a simple seated twist can realign your spine and relieve back tension.
“Sit up straight in your chair, then place your right hand on your left knee and your left hand behind you on the chair,” says Taparia. “Twist gently to the left, looking over your shoulder. Hold for 15-30 seconds, breathing deeply, then switch sides. This exercise releases tension in your spine and stretches your shoulders and chest.”
This movement also stimulates your digestive organs and increases blood flow to your spinal discs, which can become compressed during long periods of sitting.
#3 Desk Push-Ups: Activate Your Upper Body
“One of my favourites is the desk push-up because it engages multiple muscle groups quickly,” Taparia shares. “Stand about arm’s length from your desk, place your hands shoulder-width apart on the edge, and lower your chest toward the desk. Push back to the starting position and repeat 10-15 times.”
This exercise strengthens your chest, shoulders, and arms while giving you an energy boost. The movement increases heart rate temporarily, improving blood flow throughout your body and to your brain – perfect for when you need to refocus or solve a particularly challenging level.
#4 Seated Leg Raises: Improve Lower Body Circulation
Long periods of sitting can lead to poor circulation in your legs, causing discomfort and potential health issues.
“While seated, straighten one leg and hold it in position for 10-15 seconds,” instructs Taparia. “Lower it almost to the floor without touching, then raise it again. Repeat 10 times, then switch legs. For an added challenge, you can draw the alphabet with your foot while your leg is extended.”
These movements engage your quadriceps and improve blood flow to your lower extremities, reducing the risk of stiffness and swelling. They’re particularly valuable if you tend to lose track of time during intense gaming or work sessions.
#5 Chair Squats: Reactivate Your Largest Muscles
“Your glutes and leg muscles are the largest in your body, but they essentially go dormant during extended sitting,” Taparia points out. “Stand up from your chair, then lower yourself until you’re just hovering over the seat without sitting down. Hold for 5 seconds, then stand up again. Repeat this 10 times, several times throughout your day.”
This simple movement reactivates these powerful muscles, boosting your metabolism and energy levels. It’s an excellent exercise to pair with standing breaks or transitions between tasks.
Tips for Incorporating Movement Throughout Your Day
Beyond these specific exercises, Taparia suggests building movement into your daily computer routine:
“Set a timer for every 45-60 minutes as a reminder to move. Even 30 seconds of activity can make a difference,” he advises. “Keep a water bottle at your desk to stay hydrated, which naturally encourages bathroom breaks. And consider alternating between sitting and standing positions if possible.”
Another simple strategy is the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This gives your eyes a break while reminding you to check your posture and move a bit.
Neal Taparia, Founder of Unwind Media, commented:
“The human body isn’t designed for the extended periods of stillness that modern work and gaming often demand. Even tiny movements throughout the day can dramatically improve circulation, posture, and mental clarity. I’ve found that these simple exercises help me stay sharp during long strategic gaming sessions or intense work periods. Remember, consistency beats intensity when it comes to desk fitness—small, regular movements will benefit you more than occasional intense workouts after hours of immobility.”
