80% of teens play five or more different game genres
According to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), more than 80% of teens play at least five different game genres each day. The most popular genres include sports, action, puzzle, and video games with nonviolent content. In addition to the top genres, there are also several less popular ones that are equally popular among teenagers.
The study also looked at factors associated with engagement in these genres, including gender, age, and psychological functioning. The results showed that engagement in these genres correlated with the number of other genres played and the type of game played. More specifically, males and females engaged in more action games.
80% of teens own a portable gaming device
According to a recent survey, 80% of American teens are using a mobile phone. Of this number, most are using a smartphone. However, this number skews towards older teens. 76% of 15 to 17 year olds have a smartphone, and 68% of 13 to 14 year olds have a basic cell phone. And, while most of them use a handheld gaming device for gaming, a small proportion also use it for social networking. One study found that almost two-thirds of low-income households own a handheld device.

Most young adults and teens today are addicted to online gaming. Over half of teens prefer playing online games to socializing with friends in person. Social games help them meet new people in a virtual environment. Many of these games are multiplayer and allow people to compete against each other. Teens who play video games spend less time with their friends and parents. Compared to non-gamers, those who play video games for social interaction reported lower self-esteem and low social support. However, those who play video games for personal improvement reported a higher level of positive affect. This is particularly true of boys.
