Leading Swiss data centre provider Green is constructing an additional high-performance data centre on the Metro-Campus Zurich West, driven by a significant rise in demand for computing power.
Green has today announced the commencement of construction for its fourth data centre on the Metro-Campus Zurich West. The company’s headquarters will accommodate 5,526 m² of new data centre space, designed for secure and energy-efficient high-performance computing. This expansion will provide a 12-megawatt output for customer systems. The new Data Centre Zurich West 4 will also feature waste heat extraction, which will supply climate-neutral heating to the surrounding region.
Rising demand accelerates construction
The demand for modern data centres is substantial. Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, alongside the push for digitalisation across all industries, necessitate increased computing power and generate larger volumes of data. Concurrently, there is a growing trend of companies outsourcing their data centres, as many firms are dismantling their own facilities due to insufficient capacity, flexibility, and energy efficiency. “We are on the cusp of another wave of investment,” explains Roger Süess, CEO of Green, adding: “With our investment programme, we are once again doubling our data centre capacities over the next two to three years. Modern and efficient data centres are crucial if companies want to be able to realistically implement a sustainable and future-proof digitalisation.”
Data centres supported by heating networks
Green is designing its data centre architecture with a strong emphasis on high energy efficiency and the future demands of high-performance computing. The Data Centre Zurich West 4 will incorporate waste heat extraction, where the waste heat from customer systems will be channelled into the new “Naturenergie Eigenamt” heating network, operated by IBB Energie AG. Additionally, Green will utilise natural cooling (free cooling) from the ambient air to meet its cooling needs, thereby minimising energy consumption. Room designs, facilities, and controls will adhere to Green’s latest energy-saving reference architecture, with photovoltaic systems further enhancing the concept.
